New Year's Day is the first day of the year. On the Modern Gregorian calendar, it is
celebrated on January 1. On the Julian Calendar, the January 1 corresponds to January 14 on the
Gregorian calendar.
The Orthodox churches celebrate the New Year on this date. The Day is based on the movement
of the moon around the Earth.
In most of the countries, New Year's Day is a public holiday. New Years Day is often celebrated with
fireworks at the stroke of midnight as the new year starts. It marks the end of a period of
remembrance.
All over the world, people welcome the day for it is one of the oldest of all holidays. Most
New Year celebrations focus on family and friends.
People born on New Year's Day are commonly called New Year babies. Many hospitals give out prizes
to the first baby born in that hospital.
